Inspiring Imperfections

Have you heard of Kintsugi? I saw this stamp being demonstrated at OnStage and was totally intrigued to find out more about this art form. Kintsugi has been around since the 15th century, and it is the traditional Japanese technique of taking broken pottery and repairing it with gold lacquer. The mended pottery’s golden veins become a celebration of imperfection instead of hiding it. It actually becomes more valuable. What a life lesson!!!

For my cards this week I too my inspiration from Pinterest and found some wonderful examples – more to explore!! The first card I created was cased from Create with Dee (Dee Slater). The base is Misty Moonlight and I used Gold foil for the first layer followed by a layer of the stunning DSP. I used Textured Notes dies to frame the sentiment – one layer in gold and the other in Basic White to which I added the sentiment and the flower. I used some floral gold embellishments to complete the card. There is a Basic White panel inside for you to write your message, as the gold and Misty Moonlight DSP only are placed on the right edge of the card.

The second card was inspired by Katie Drew cards. I hadn’t seen much of her work before, but I do love what she has done with this set. Again you have a Basic White base and then there is a layer of Cloud Cover. I stamped some random splotches on this with Azure Afternoon and then embossed it with the embossing folder from the suite. On this I layered a piece of Basic White to which I added a Misty Moonlight layer cut out with the Textured Note Dies. The vase and the cup were stamped with Blueberry Bushel on Basic White and Cloud Cover and then diecut them. They were raised with dimensionals on the front. I diecut some veins in Cloud Cover and used these as branches. I then added some of the white diecut flowers to which I added a little Azure Afternoon with a Blending Brush. I then added some Hues of Blue flowers to the card to finish it off.

The third card was inspired by Wendy Waldman. This time she used Misty Moonlight as her base and then I stamped flowers and the mini blossom all over it in Misty Moonlight. I used the Textured notes dies for the top layer (Basic White) and added the vase and cup stamped on Misty Moonlight and diecut. A piece of gold foil was added like a branch behind the cup. The card was finished off with some gold flower embellishments.

I did create one more card using Cloud Cover, Basic White and Misty Moonlight. Both layers were cut out using the Postage dies and I added some gold veins to the Misty Moonlight layer. I added gold ribbon cut in strips under the vase and cup and added a Petal Pink flower and sentiment to finish the card off.

Here’s my Timeout Tuesday episode featuring these cards.

I look forward to playing some more with the set over the next year. Using it reminded me that, even with traumatic events in our lives, we can use the broken pieces of pain, grief and sadness to move forward and add richness to ourselves and others through them.
